Caribbean Vacation Planning: The Basics

Are you craving endless beaches, cold cocktails and blue oceans? Well, this is just the right time to start planning your first Caribbean vacation. A first-timer might think everything is perfect in the Caribbean, but there are some things you can do to make your holiday even better and more comfortable. Keep these tips in mind when planning your tropical adventure.

Caribbean Vacation Planning: The Basics

Set the date

When planning your Caribbean vacation, one of the most important things to plan well is your date of arrival. How long does it takes to plan your trip, how much money you’ll spend on your plane ticket and accommodation, how much tourists you’ll share the island with and what kind of weather will welcome you all depend on when you decide to go to your tropical vacation.

In the Caribbean, the high season usually runs from December to April and during this time the prices are at their highest and the destinations are packed. However, the weather during those months is more or less perfect every day. On the other hand, during the offseason, you can expect a lot fewer crowds and hotel and airfare discounts of 20 to 60 percent. But, those prices also come with less-than-perfect weather and frequent construction works at resorts and all over the island. Keep in mind that between June and November, the Caribbean often get hit with hurricanes (Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are usually safe).

Research your destination

Research your destination

The Caribbean take up over 1,700 miles of islands in the Caribbean Sea and all islands are different. Some are volcanic and rocky and some are coral and sandy. Also, some islands are independent countries while others belong to the U.S., France, U.K. and Netherlands. So, you can conclude that each destination has a unique vibe, activities and tourist offerings.

When you’re planning your vacation, check your priorities before you book your ticket. For instance, if you’re looking for top-notch nightlife, pick Puerto Rico, the Bahamas or Aruba. However, if you’re more into nature, exploration and hiking, go with something more rugged like Grenada or Dominica.

Come prepared

All the islands are modern countries with plenty of the necessary amenities, but you still need to pack well. Your bikini will be your best friend during your Caribbean adventure.

Since you can shop for cute bikinis online, you can pack a few sets, so you never have to wear a wet bathing suit again. Plus, you’ll get to snap a lot of Insta photos without boring your followers.  Besides your swimwear, make sure to bring a lot of sunblock and bug spray—mosquitoes are prevalent in the Caribbean. A light rain jacket will also come in handy for those passing showers.

Come prepared

Pick the right accommodation

There are various types of accommodation in the Caribbean from all-inclusive resorts to independent hotels and villas and you should be careful what you choose. Keep your travel style in mind, because all-inclusive resorts are great for those looking for relaxation with their partner or family. However, these resorts might be a little boring for travelers who want to get a taste of local culture and lifestyle. Adventurers are better off staying in independent hotels.

Experience the local culture

Even if you stay in a resort, you can still get to experience some of the local culture—it’s better than nothing! Seek some spots away from the huge resorts where locals go to eat, party and have fun. Venturing away from tourist spots almost guarantees a much more authentic vacation. Don’t know where to find these spots? Ask a local—most people are very friendly and happy to tell you about places they and their family like to visit.

Refrain from renting a car

Refrain from renting a car

While some travelers choose to rent a car as soon as they arrive at their destination, you might want to reconsider that decision in the Caribbean. Getting a car there can quickly become a full-blown disaster, especially if you’re not used to driving on the left side of the road. Also, some areas have zero road signs and very bumpy roads. Aruba and St. Thomas are suitable for driving, Barbados can be difficult for non-locals, while Bermuda doesn’t even allow cars!

If you keep these Caribbean vacation tips in mind, you’ll really have a dream tropical holiday. Pick the right date, pack sensibly, use your common sense and don’t hesitate to explore the location and you’ll surely come back to the Caribbean next year!
