Every being in the world has some source from where it originates. It is the same for both living and non-living beings. The Internet is no exception to this theory. This virtual world or digital media has always intrigued people, for the longest time. 

There is literally no individual who is not curious about the origination and the workings of the Internet. One such area of interest, rather a curiosity, has been ‘ What is the age of Internet?’

Did you know, this virtual concept ( not visible to the eyes)- the Internet, has a predecessor too? Fascinating right? 

Birthed in the month of November in the year 1969, The ARPAnet sets precedence for the idea of the Internet. According to this, the Internet should be half a century old. However, in it was in the month of January in the year 1983, that ARPAnet was transported to the TCP/IP Protocol.

It is known to power the modern-day Internet- till date. However, this information raises a turmoil regarding the Internet age. Because if calculated on the basis of the current date, then the Internet is supposed to be a 37 yrs old (13505 days) digital lad. 

The Internet age primarily denotes the time span, since when the Internet had announced its availability for the mass, and initiated general usage. With the advent of the Internet the, there were many repercussions  & fundamental alterations in the functioning of global communication & the ‘access to information’ protocol.

However, there are some knowledgeable individuals who argue that the initiation of this ‘modern concept’ & the recent form of the Internet, took place in the late 1990. Although, the  Internet officially came into existence a few years prior to that. 

In fact, the popularly known HTML code, that was created by the renowned computer scientist, Tim Berners Lee, marks the first ever authentic web page to exist. It is significant because with it starts the era of  The World Wide Web.

It was in 1995 that the Internet had started impacting culture & commerce, which includes the advancement of the near-instant communication- with the help of email, Voice Over Internet Protocol, Instant Messaging, The 2-way Interactive Video Calls, Along with that several Discussion Forums, video streaming websites Services, Blogs and Online Shopping Websites of the World Wide Web, were also the subjects of impact.  

As per the history of Internet, its growth has been escalated by greater quantities of online info & knowledge, entertainment, commerce, and the social networking services. However, during the late 1990s, an estimation was made that the total traffic obtained on the public Internet was increasing by 100% every year. 

While the Mean Annual Growth calculated on the basis of the no of Internet users was estimated to be somewhere around 20% – 50%.This growth is, however, a product of the lack of administration from the Center’s end.

It has been the primary factor that has been attributed to the ‘non-proprietary nature and the ‘organic growth of the network. It has also encouraged vendor interoperability & prevented any particular company from exerting excess control over the network.  

The Internet has literally changed the definition of traditional communication, by replacing radio, paper mail, newspapers, and television with digital newspapers,  video streaming websites,  social networking websites, and so much more.  

Even businessmen have been majorly benefitted from the online shopping options that the Internet provides us with. 

Political & Social Impacts

If talking about social impacts, then we all know how Internet has been working and updating its features to keep the people of the world connected- to each other. It is through the Internet that we can easily communicate with a friend who is probably residing on some other continent. 

Political impacts? Well, it is better not to tread along that path. *wink*

*World Population- 6.5 billion (2005), 6.9 billion (2010), 7.4 billion (2017) and 7.75 billion (2019)

*Worldwide- 16% (2005), 30% (2010), 48% (2017) and 53.6% (2019)

*Developed Countries- 51% (2005),   67%  (2010), 81%  (2017) and  86.6% (2019)

*Developing Countries- 8% (2005),  21% (2010), 41.3% (2017) and 47% (2019)
